Mernda Cricket Club

Round 7 highlights.

The First XI were in top form again in round 7, running out 54 run winners against DVCA powerhouse Diamond Creek.

Paul Baker was the pick of the batsmen on Day 1, smashing the Diamond Creek attack to all parts on his way to 45. It was a typical "Bakes" innings that showed why he's talked about as being one of the greats of our competition. Meanwhile, Ian Chesterton put together a bowling performance that would have had on-lookers thinking they'd jumped in a time machine and hit the button for the 1980's! He caused absolute devastation among the opposition's top order, finishing with figures of 17 overs, 8 maidens, 4 for 27

That win puts Mernda in the top 4 at the Christmas break and the boys will be looking to come out and consolidate their spot in Round 8 when they host Riverside in what is the match of the round.

The 2nd XI came so close to pulling off a remarkable win against Diamond Creek, but fell agonisingly short, losing by 2 runs.

Shane McCarter took the bowling honours, combining swing, bounce and accuracy on his way to figures of 3 for 36 from 16 overs that helped restrict Diamond Creek to a score that was within reach of the Mernda batsmen.  Mark Perrin played his best knock for the year top scoring with 27 that gave the boys every chance of coming away with a win after being in serious trouble at the end of Day 1.

Mernda head to Riverside in Round 8 and will be looking to bounce back with a first up win after the Christmas break. This is a real 8 point game for the boys, their opposition sit equal on points inside the Top 4 and a win this week will go a long way towards playing finals for the first time in many seasons.

The 3rd XI were deafeated by 24 runs in Round 7.

Brad Czerny played an integral part in the game for Mernda, his all round efforts of 5 for 50 from 10 overs and 41 with the bat helped Mernda get within sight of victory, but unfotunately the result wasn't forthcoming.

The boys now sit 8th on the D Grade ladder and need to win more than they lose after Christmas to give themselves any chance of playing finals this year.

The 4th XI suffered yet again in Round 7, going down to Whittlesea by 6 wickets. The boys toiled hard all day and never dropped their heads but couldn't quite get the points. It's been a year to forget on the scoreboard for Mernda, but the group really have bonded well in teh face of adversity and will be much better fo for the experience.
